In this interactive, collaborative, and engaging workshop, we will focus on Number Sense, Student Thinking, and Problem-Solving. We’ll explore readymade tools and resources that support diverse student populations through purposeful mathematical learning. Learn how to implement number sense activities that students need and are connected to the grade level content you teach. We will better understand why and how students need to be active members of a mathematical discourse community by using student thinking to drive our math instruction and by using problem-solving to push student potential and deepen conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Known for: Visual Patterns, Math Talksblog

If there is a perfect mathematics curriculum out there, then no one has brought it to my attention. So, what options do we have? As a full-time practicing classroom teacher, I will share with you what I implement in my classroom that covers a range of “critical thinking demands” to invite all students into a mathematics curriculum that is relevant and challenging, one that values procedural skills as well as conceptual understanding. We will work with visual patterns to develop algebraic reasoning and engage in number talks to develop number sense and flexible thinking. We will experience productive struggle through rich and challenging tasks that support the Standards for Mathematical Practice. We will implement a curriculum that endeavors to make math social, one that values collaboration and encourages play and risk taking.
